Welcome the the Second Grade

Second Grade is a year of important growth and development socially, emotionally, physically, and academically. We believe that it is essential to teach to individual needs and interests in order to foster that growth and to develop the characteristics of a successful academic career. We hold high expectations for all children.

We also believe that by teaching concepts, not simply processes we facilitate the thorough transfer and application of knowledge. We reinforce phonemic awareness, teach reading comprehension strategies as well as decoding, and encourage the development of children's writing.

There are many interesting units of study in second grade. One favorite of many students is our investigation of animals and how they adapt to their environments. Another interesting unit is the study of different communities. We welcome Junior Achievement volunteers, Read 2 Succeed Volunteers and our school resource officer to enhance and enrich our understanding.

Our math curriculum includes hands-on, active student exploration of real-world mathematics. Our school-wide math initiative has brought a new emphasis on mental math skills, problem solving, data collection and analysis. Students work independently and cooperatively to develop and communicate their mathematical understanding.

Our students also enjoy and learn during a variety of field trips, such as the Crealde School of Art, the Orlando Science Center, and the Nutcracker Ballet at the Bob Carr Auditorium.
