Welcome to the First Grade

In the first grade we work hard to establish a safe and rewarding environment for our students. Maintaining each child's self-esteem and building a secure foundation for future growth is our priority.

Each child will progress at his/her own rate, acquiring new skills as he/she is developmentally ready. It is extremely important to keep in mind that we build on small success. Celebrating these successes at school as well as at home keeps our students enthusiastic about learning.
First Grade Curriculum
In the fist grade the children's lessons are all based on the Sunshine State Standards from grade level expectations. We currently use the Houghton Mifflin reading series,the Harcourt Brace Math series, and Thinking Maps.

Language Arts

  • Dolch basic sight words
  • Phonetics for decoding
  • Literal and inferential comprehension
  • Writing and preparation skills for FCAT exam Handwriting using Zaner-Bloser
  • Spelling which correlates to the phonics program

Math

  • Geometry-flat and solid shapes, and symmetry
  • Measurement-inches, feet, centimeters, temperature and weight
  • Calculating by adding, and subtracting sums to 18 and 2 digit with no regroup
  • Time and Money- Telling time to the hour, and half-hour, reading calendars, and counting change to $1.00.
  • Fractions-Halves, thirds, and fourths
  • Problem solving and explaining their answers

Social Studies

  • Time Continuity, and change
  • People, places and environments
  • Governments and the citizen

Science

  • The nature of matter
  • Energy
  • Force and motion
  • Earth and space
  • Processes of life
  • How living things interact with their environments
