What is a Learning Disability?
People with learning disabilities
have average to above average intelligence, but have trouble learning
because their minds process words or information differently. The
term "learning disability" means a disorder in one or
more of the basic processes involved in understanding spoken or
written language. It may show up as a problem in a person's ability
to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do math, despite
at least average intelligence. The term does not refer to children
who have problems which are primarily the result of visual, hearing
or physical handicaps, mental retardation, emotional disturbance,
or of environmental, cultural, or economic disadvantage.
Students identified for services through
the Specific Learning Disabilities elementary school program generally
receive instruction in the basic skill areas of reading, written
expression, and/or mathematics, along with support in social and
organizational skills. The primary purpose of basic skill instruction
through the SLD program is to empower the student to participate
in the general education classroom.
The SLD student needs to be taught
efficient learning strategies as well as basic skills. We work on
strategies for acquiring, organizing, storing and/or retrieving
information. All students must BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES!
"IF YOU CAN BELIEVE
... YOU CAN ACHIEVE!

DEFINITION FOR EDUCABLE MENTALLY
HANDICAPPED

during the developmental period. An educable mentally handicapped
student is a student who is mildly impaired in intellectual and
adaptive behavior and whose development reflects a reduced rate
of learning. The measured intelligence of an educable mentally handicapped
student generally falls between two (2) and three (3) standard deviations
below the mean, and the assessed adaptive behavior falls below that
of other students of the same age and socio-cultural group.
