What We Are Learning!

We have celebrated 50 years at Lake Como Elementary School. We reflect and recognize that we have built a strong learning foundation upon a community full of tradition and love. We are proud of our students and their efforts and continue to see and expect positive results. We are always looking for ways to grow and meet the needs of our children as we strive to educate them. We have reviewed the strengths and areas for growth in our curriculum and instruction. Our curriculum remains the same as directed by the Florida Sunshine State Standards and Benchmarks.

This program includes the following reading components:

  • Reading Aloud to children(Teacher reads aloud to the children)
  • Shared Reading (Teacher and children read together)
  • Guided Reading (Teacher works with small groups of children on skills or strategies.)
  • Independence Reading (Each student reads his or her own book.)
  • Phonemic Awareness (The sounds of language)
  • Phonics (The sounds that letters make and their combinations)
  • Spelling
  • Flexible groups to practice skills

In Mathematics, we will begin to use a different type of math lesson. The students will have an opportunity to interact with other students in problem solving, project based, hands on mathematical learning. We will be concentrating on the number sense strand but will continue to work on all strands; algebraic reasoning, data analysis, geometry, and measurement.
